Dear Parents and Carers,

This week, the children in both Sweden and Germany Classes have developed a shared interest in space, leading to lots of exciting opportunities for collaborative play, creativity and exploration.

The children worked together to create a large junk-modelled rocket, carefully selecting and attaching different materials to represent the various features of a rocket. Their imaginative thinking was evident as they transformed everyday objects into rocket parts – for example, a spatula became a control lever inside the spacecraft. Through this activity, the children developed their communication, problem-solving and creative thinking skills while working together towards a shared goal.

The children also enjoyed exploring cause and effect by using pumps and bottles to launch flying rockets. They were fascinated by how air pressure could make the rockets move and were eager to predict, test and observe what happened during each launch.

To extend their interest, the children learnt and sang songs about travelling to the moon and were encouraged to design and draw their own rockets. They carefully thought about the features their rockets would need and used a variety of marks and shapes to represent their ideas.

These activities have strongly supported the children's Knowledge and Understanding of the World as they explored concepts linked to space, technology, forces and how things work. They have been asking questions, investigating, making predictions and learning about the world beyond their immediate environment. Alongside this, the children have developed important skills in communication, creativity, collaboration and critical thinking.

It has been wonderful to see their curiosity and enthusiasm for learning as they continue their journey of discovery through play.

Thank you for your continued support, and we hope you have a lovely weekend!

Dear Parents and Carers,

This week the children have been busy exploring, creating and solving problems through a range of exciting play opportunities.

Germany Class
Following the children's interests, they worked together to plan and create a castle using loose parts. The castle included an opening door and different rooms, and the children showed fantastic teamwork as they shared ideas and brought their design to life. They also collaborated to build their own rocket using wooden bricks, demonstrating great imagination and creativity.

Other popular activities this week have included making superhero masks, mark making, and exploring the sand and water areas. It has been wonderful to see the children developing their communication, creativity and problem-solving skills through their play.

Sweden Class
The children in Sweden Class have been developing their problem-solving and critical thinking skills. They explored different ways of getting balls to travel smoothly along a series of drain pipes, experimenting with positioning and angles to create a steady flow. The children showed great perseverance as they tested their ideas and worked together to find solutions.

Other interests this week have included threading, cutting, construction activities and imaginative play. These experiences have supported the children's fine motor development, creativity and confidence as they continue to learn through play.

Thank you for your continued support. We hope you have a lovely weekend and look forward to another exciting week of learning ahead!

This week has been full of exciting opportunities for the children to explore, investigate and develop new skills through play.

Sweden Class
The children in Sweden Class have enjoyed taking part in a variety of exciting activities, including dancing, bubble making and mark making. It has been wonderful to see the children showing concentration and determination during their learning. One of our youngest learners remained focused while completing a shape matching puzzle, while another was eager to practise their cutting skills by cutting across a piece of fabric. Outdoors, several children enjoyed the challenge of carefully jumping across a wooden ladder on the ground, developing their balance and coordination. It has been lovely to see each child show perseverance and pride in their achievements.

Germany Class
The children in Germany Class have shown a keen interest in weighing and measuring this week. Many enjoyed exploring giant bucket scales, using different objects to weigh, compare and balance the buckets. This interest continued into the mud kitchen, where some learners carefully measured ingredients to create their own ‘mud cakes’. The children demonstrated fantastic curiosity and early mathematical skills as they explored concepts such as weight, balance and quantity through play.

Thank you for your continued support, and we hope you have a lovely weekend!

This week the children have enjoyed lots of creative and imaginative learning experiences both indoors and outdoors.

Sweden Class
The children in Sweden Class have enjoyed using chunky pens to create a large collaborative drawing. The paper was taller than the children, which encouraged them to reach, stretch and engage their core muscles as they drew from the top to the bottom of the page. It has been lovely to see how the children have continued to develop and add to their shared artwork throughout the week, showing great teamwork and creativity.

Germany Class
In Germany Class, our focus story this week has been Dear Zoo. The children have shown a strong interest in animals and have enjoyed retelling the story in a variety of ways. They have used props such as masks and puppets to bring the story to life. The children also enjoyed drawing some of the characters on large paper, which was labelled by an adult to support early writing skills. Alongside this, they have been busy using the writing desk to make marks in their books and on paper, developing their early literacy skills with great enthusiasm.

We would also like to invite you to our parental engagement sessions on maths through play on Wednesday 20th May 2026. These will take place at 10.00am–11.00am or 1.30pm–2.30pm. We look forward to welcoming you and sharing how we support early mathematical development through fun, hands-on learning.

This week the children have enjoyed lots of creative and imaginative learning experiences both indoors and outdoors.

Sweden Class
The windy weather this week created lots of excitement for the children in Sweden Class, who loved spending time outside exploring the changing conditions. The children helped to make a washing line with a large piece of fabric hanging from it and enjoyed watching the wind whirl and whoosh the material through the air. They took turns trying to move underneath the fabric as it lifted upwards in the wind, encouraging lots of laughter, movement and exploration.

Germany Class
The children in Germany Class have continued to show a real love for stories and puppets. Following their interest, many learners chose to create their own collage puppets using a range of different fabrics and materials. The children made several types of puppets, including sock puppets and stick puppets. One child created a monkey puppet, while another made a puppet of her mum. Afterwards, the children used their puppets to tell stories, sing songs and make their friends laugh, showing fantastic imagination and creativity.

Thank you for your continued support, and we hope you have a lovely weekend!

This week in nursery, the children have been focusing on developing their skills in number, shape and money through a variety of fun, play-based activities.

In Sweden Class, the children enjoyed exploring our farm shop role play area. They took turns being the shopkeeper and the customer, exchanging money for different items. This provided a great opportunity for the children to practise early maths skills while also developing their communication and social skills.

In Germany Class, the children have been busy exploring numbers and shapes. They used numicon to match and count, carefully filling different shapes. The children also had lots of fun playing a beanbag number game, where they aimed to throw beanbags into numbered hoops. Afterwards, they recorded their scores on the ground using chalk, practising their number formation in an engaging and active way.

It has been lovely to see the children so involved and enthusiastic in their learning.

Thank you for your continued support!

It has been a lovely week in nursery, and the children have enjoyed a range of exciting activities across both classes.

Sweden Class
The children have made the most of the sunny weather by planting sunflower seeds. They worked together to fill plant pots with soil and carefully added the seeds. Some were also planted in the large planter outside the classroom. Once the seeds were tucked safely into the soil, the children watered them and are now looking forward to watching them grow. This was a great opportunity for teamwork and learning about how plants grow.

Germany Class
In Germany Class, the children were very excited to watch a puppet show retelling the story of St George and the Dragon. They loved joining in with chants and roaring loudly whenever the dragon appeared! Afterwards, many of the children were inspired to create their own stories using puppets and props. Some children used loose parts to build their own castles, while others used toys to represent swords and shields, showing fantastic imagination and creativity.

Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to another fun-filled week ahead!

Welcome back! We hope you all had a lovely Easter break. It has been wonderful to see the children return to nursery so happy, settled and ready to learn. We are incredibly proud of how well they have come back—quickly remembering our routines, expectations and settling straight back into nursery life.

This week, we have also welcomed some new learners to our nursery. They are settling in beautifully, and it has been lovely to see friendships already beginning to form.

The children showed fantastic teamwork when a group decided they wanted to make their own playdough. They carefully worked together to mix the ingredients, taking turns and following the process step by step. Once it was ready, we shared it with Sweden Class, who had great fun exploring the playdough’s texture and enjoying its lovely lemon scent.

Playdough is a fantastic malleable material that helps to strengthen the muscles in children’s hands, supporting their development as they begin to prepare for writing.

If you would like to try this at home, please take a look at our class story where you will find the recipe.

Thank you for your continued support!

As we come to the end of a wonderful term, we would like to take a moment to reflect on some of the lovely experiences the children have enjoyed at nursery.

Building positive relationships with parents is a very important part of supporting young children in their learning and development. We were delighted to welcome so many of you to our “Share a Story” afternoons on Tuesday and Wednesday. The sessions were a great success, and the children were so excited to see their parents in nursery and share their favourite books together. Thank you to everyone who was able to attend and make the afternoons so special.

We were also incredibly proud of the children during our Achievement and Easter assemblies. They were all fantastic and showed such confidence, enthusiasm and wonderful behaviour. It was lovely to celebrate their achievements together and see how proud they were of themselves.

Looking ahead to the next half term, our new topic will be “Animals and Their Babies.” We will begin by exploring how we grow and change from babies into children. To support this learning, we would love for you to upload a photo of your child as a baby to Tapestry. We will use these photos to compare with pictures of the children now and talk about how they have grown and changed.

Finally, we would like to wish all of our families a very Happy Easter. Thank you for your continued support this term. We hope you all have a lovely break and we look forward to welcoming the children back for another exciting half term of learning and fun.

This week we were were lucky as some of our parents joined in  our maths session to see how it is taught in Early Years.  The children excitedly joined in a game of rolling the die and moving in response to a specific number. For example 5 on the die is matched by 5 jumps. In nursery, the children learn about maths through songs, play and exploration.  Staff provide a scaffold to support the children’s misconceptions or to develop their skills. The children are able to self-select mathematical equipment to play with everyday.

The children enjoyed using bricks to build  a dinosaur shape, then they had a challenge to count how many bricks they had used. Some learners decided to make a specific dinosaur - with one child creating a plesiosaur. He then spoke about it swimming underwater and counted the blocks.

Some of our younger learners have enjoyed sorting bears into different coloured pots.  Matching and sorting is also a skill that the children in Germany class use too.  An example of this was when some learners selected to fill boards with numicon.

This week Nursery have been busy learning about dinosaurs and having fun making them. Please do send in any boxes and bottles you have so the children can use them to make models. We are also in need of old outgrown wellies so that children can enjoy playing outside whatever the weather.

Literacy is one of the specific areas from the early years foundation stage and links into  every aspect of a child's play.  It is divided into two key areas which are: reading and writing.

Reading

In both nursery rooms there is a story area which is full of exciting books.  Currently our topic is about dinosaurs and the children have explored non fiction books as well as looking at their familiar favourites.

Sharing storiesRoom on the broom

Writing

Children in nursery may create marks using different media. For example chalks, paint, pens etc. This week, the children were challenged to 'take a dinosaur for a walk' using a pen to move it. They enjoyed walking their dinosaurs on a large sheet of paper.

This week, despite the weather the children have been excited to spend time outside. They have been developing their gross motor skills through activities such as throwing balls into hoops and balancing on low beams. These activities also help to develop resilience and confidence.

Basketball

Balancing

The children enjoyed listening to different genres of music and have shown an interest in exploring musical instruments. During continuous provision the children chose several nursery rhymes to sing and formed their own band.

Dummies

Whilst these are useful to pacify your baby and are the personal choice of parents at home, we do encourage you to ween your child off their dummy during the day by the time they start Nursery so that they are able to develop their speech and also so that we can ensure these are not lost, dropped and become dirty. Nursery staff cannot disinfect dummies during the school day and many of our Nursery children enjoy outside play as well as indoor. Chat this through with the Nursery staff when they join us so that this can be done gradually as we also do not want children to feel anxious. This is a link to a useful article on the pros and cons of dummies.

We are very proud of our nursery, which gives our children the best start to their learning journey at MHLA. This week we have had seven new starters in Sweden and Germany. Class and they have been busy enjoying the cold weather and freezing water! By sending your child to Nursery, you are giving them the greatest opportunity to thrive at school - Mrs Richings and the Nursery team work so hard to ensure that the youngest children also learn the prime skills of communication, physical development and social skills. Here are some examples of what they have been learning this week....

N1

This week we encouraged the children to make their own sensory bottles. They selected resources such as buttons, glitter or stones. Then, they added water to complete their creation. It was great fun!

The children devised strategies to help the dinosaurs escape from the ice.

N2N3

Some children immersed themselves in the world of imaginative storytelling through their play using small world toys and construction equipment.
